How To Help Others To Improve

  • Ask open and probing questions to help discover the sources of problems
  • Accept mistakes and use them as learning opportunities
  • Help develop action plans for improvements rather than just talking around problems
  • Always try to educate rather than just to assist with the problem
  • Provide meaningful and relevant feedback that educates and informs
  • Encourage continual improvement
  • Suspend judgement until all of the facts are known
  • Recognise even small improvements in performance and reward if this is possible
  • Actively listen to what is going on and show genuine interest
  • Model and deliver in public the behaviours that you want to see from your staff

Never forget that an unwritten, but widely assumed, management principle is that the manager is an agent of change, development and improvement – otherwise your employer would have kept the previous post holder!

Good Luck!
