How To Get Things Done
Good managers test out their ability to do new things and to rise to new challenges: that is an unwritten part of the Job Description and an integral part of the Person Specification and goes without saying.
What is NOT written down in either of those documents is that fact that staff, your colleagues and senior management will hold you to account for what you say that you will get done and how you will get it done!
Thinking ahead is good, delivering is essential and this only comes about by holding yourself accountable to yourself.
Being accountable to ourselves about our goals is an essential management trait: no manager should be reliant upon anyone else when it comes to delivering on our goals and objectives. It is all about acting upon, and being decisive about, what we need to achieve.
Your outcomes are dependent upon three things that only you can influence:
- Commitment to a goal or objective – how dedicated are you to fully delivering against any target or outcome that you have been set?
A very clear and effective strategy here is to write this down so that it is very clear, using measurable and objective language. This makes things very clear about what you are working to and is a constant reminder of what you are working towards.
- Focus on the goal or objective – what will you do in practical terms to get the job done?
Human nature will trick us into forgetting about the goal or pushing it to one side when we get busy. To maintain your focus, make sure that your written document is permanently visible to give you that extra boost in your efforts to get the task completed.
- Force of will – how much concerted and targeted action will you invest in getting the task accomplished when balanced against other, possibly competing demands on your time?
Get it firmly into your mind that only you can make this happen and that the thrill of success is yours to experience but, in the same way, the shame of non-completion is also down to you!
The three pointers above will serve as a very strong model for your staff to mirror and use in achieving their objectives and goals – always remember that their success is ultimately your success!
There is only one person who can make this happen and that is YOU!
