How To Make Working From Home Work For You

On the surface of things working from home seems a great thing to do and having been a homeworker for seven years I can definitely say it has its advantages as well a series of disadvantages.

The following three pointers worked for me – I hope they work for you too if you get the chance to work from home!

  1. Set some boundaries: the biggest problem of working from home is the temptation to be available all of the time all of the day. Be clear on your office hours, set up the Out of Office message and stick to it. Being available at all times of the day – and night – sets expectations running in your organisation that you are ever-present. This is NOT a good approach.
  2. Ring-fence creative/thinking time: make sure that you have time to reflect and prepare for activities with colleagues. This will make sure that you are effective and in-touch with those who are not home-based.
  3. Take regular breaks and get out of the house: being in your home base is very nice but it can be a very lonely existence. For your own personal well-being getting out ad about is a must-do part of your working day.
