How To Identify A Poor Manager

Poor managers deliver little value to any organisation: they have a detrimental effect upon those around them, contribute nothing or very little to the bottom line, sap the collective motivational spirit in any workplace and stimulate both low productivity and high staff retention.

So what sort of strategies do they practice and more importantly how will we recognise their work patterns?

  • They have an unnatural focus upon short-term goals and strategies: here staff are rewarded for a focus on the here-and-now rather than the long term approach that successful organisations need.
  • The structures in their areas only serve to maintain what is being delivered now rather than looking to find new ideas and different ways of doing things.
  • There is a lack of training and development being delivered which means that the area is slowly decaying as new skills that are needed are not being considered.

Look around at areas of your organisation and look to see if that Department Manager has fallen into one or more of the above traps.
