Delta Airlines was an established “old economy” operation that saw the need to transform into a “new-economy” business, performing various functions electronically in order to enhance its operations. Delta’s Digital Nervous System is a good example of networked computing that facilitates electronic commerce. Delta uses its DNS to cut costs (for example by selling tickets on its web site and computerising baggage-handling to minimise lost bags) and to start a new line of business (its for-profit aircraft maintenance operation).
