Why Information Richness Is Important For Managers
Just as an Army marches on its stomach successful organisations and the managers within need information as lifeblood. Whilst organisations source information, research it, manipulate it and crunch, dice and slice it in many different ways (Pie Chart anyone?) a more subtle, but no less important aspect of information management links into the concept of Information Richness.
We assume that the way in which we communicate with others, and how others communicate with us is just the way things get done in our working environment, a more logical way is to consider how “Rich” the systems are and then to correlate this back to how effective and efficient the workplace actually is.
Information Richness can be seen as a range outlined below;
- How much good quality Face To Face communication takes place at work?
- How much spoken communication gets transmitted in electronic form? Too much is not a good thing here!
- How much Personally Addressed Written Communication is used? Not a good thing.
- How much Impersonal Written Communication is used? A Terrible thing!
Those organisations (or Departments/Sections within an organisation) that rely on 1 above as the main thrust of communication are Information Rich!
Those organisations (or Departments/Sections within an organisation) that rely on 3 or 4 above as the main thrust of communication are Information Poor!
Consider how Rich or Poor your personal style is and put yourself in the shoes of the person on the receiving end!
You could also resolve to make some changes!
