Make The Day Work For You – Set Effective Priorities

We all have too much to do and those around us are constantly requiring more and more in terms of attention and outputs.

Apply the Must/Should/Could Know model of Information Priority and apply this to your current job role – you might be surprised or horrified by what you uncover but at least you will have a handle on where things might be going slightly wobbly!

Must tasks – things that you really have to do, things that are business-critical and cannot be shelved/ignored/deleted.

Should tasks – not quite as white-hot as Must tasks but things that will probably become Must tasks in the near future.

Could tasks – the lowest level of priority, probably more pleasant than the other two and probably the most interesting of all. Focus on these when there is literally nothing else to do (which is probably never!).

If you produce a table that shows what fits into each section you can then critically assess your findings – and make some sensible decisions about how to move forward.

Are you at ease with the content of each section and if not what actions would you need to take to remedy any shortfalls?
