Based on Daniel Goleman’s high level model of Emotional Intelligence (EI) highlights four key components used by skilful managers to work with and get the best possible from their staff. They are;

  1. Self-awareness — the ability to read one’s emotions and fully recognise their impact while using gut feelings, intuition and practical experience to guide decisions.
  2. Self-management — involves controlling one’s emotions and impulses and adapting to changing circumstances. Whilst it is tempting to dive in, feet first, resist and think carefully. Fools rush in, and all that!
  3. Social awareness — the ability to sense, understand, and react to others’ emotions while comprehending social networks. People always operate in groups, even those that appear not to be!
  4. Relationship management — the ability to inspire, influence, and develop others while managing conflict. This requires real skill and patience to bring out the best in your staff team while juggling several live bombs and nuclear devices!
